Junior Competition

District Centre of Excellence

The Centre of Excellence is the foundation for the WAFL’s future and a key to the ongoing development of our great game in Western Australia. The aim is to ensure all players coming through the WA development system have exposure to opportunities that maximise their potential.

This initiative aims to deliver:

Higher quality WAFL players

Greater number of draftable players to the AFL

Highest standard of coaching and support staff

Higher quality of community level players

Higher quality of educated parents for future generations

The concept of WAFL Clubs as a “Centre of Excellence” for the District is the foundation of future growth and prosperity. It has been endorsed by the AFL, WAFC and all WAFL Boards. This model will continue to grow the game in Western Australia and find a synergy between the WAFL Club and its District.

NAB Auskick

NAB Auskick

The NAB AFL Auskick program provides boys and girls with a fun and safe Australian Football experience that serves as an introduction to a lifetime of involvement in the game. The program is not just about introducing children to Australian Football – it activates and develops within each child the desire for a healthy lifestyle and an association with our great game. This is achieved through activities and programs for individuals, small groups and teams, and aims to assist development of personal and social skills.

NAB AFL Auskick is a program managed by the local community for the community. Adults play an essential role, whether as parents, coaches, administrators or officials, in supporting junior football in Australia.

Children learn best by example. Therefore codes of conduct provide clear behavioural guidelines and promote a quality environment in which both the game and the participants can flourish.

Visit the official NAB Auskick website for registration details...How to Register

Code of conduct – Parents and spectators

Encourage children to participate regardless of ability

Encourage participants to always play by the rules

Never ridicule mistakes or losses

Remember that participants learn best by example. Applaud good play by all teams

Never publicly disagree with officials. If you disagree, raise the issue privately through appropriate channels

Actively discourage racial abuse

Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches

Remember that participants play for fun and are not miniature professionals

Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players

Encourage players to accept the umpire's decisions

Demonstrate exemplary behaviour by not using foul language, or harassing players, coaches or officials

Smoking and the consumption of alcohol is unacceptable at junior sport

Code of conduct – Coaches and teachers

Be reasonable in your demands: consider young players' time, energy and enthusiasm levels

Avoid over-playing the talented players. The just 'average' players' need and deserve equal time. n Keep winning in perspective: maximise participation because children participate for fun and enjoyment

Stress safety: ensure that equipment and facilities are safe and appropriate for age and ability levels

Consider maturity levels: match up practice schedules, activities and degree of competition

Develop team respect: for opponents as well as for the judgement of officials and opposing coaches

Recognise the importance of injury: seek and follow the physician's advice concerning injured players

Keep informed: with sound principles of coaching and skill development, and development of children

Teach sporting behaviour: create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviour as well as basic skills

Get priorities right: ensure skill learning and appropriate behaviour are the priority over competition

Teach fair play: help children understand the responsibilities and implications of their freedom to choose between fair and unfair play

FOOTY 4 MUMS RETURNS FOR 2012

The West Perth Football District are excited to announce that Footy 4 Mums will return again in 2012, bigger and better than ever! The District has been conducting Footy 4 Mums Skills Sessions for the past 5 years with outstanding results of more mothers having the confidence and skills to have a kick with their children in the back yard or at the local oval.

In 2012, the West Perth District will take a more structured approach to the skills sessions covering the topics of; introduction to football and female football options, basic skills and drills, introduction to umpiring (covering basic signals and any burning questions for our umpiring expert), introduction to AFL 9's the exciting new brand of Social AFL perfect for ladies wanting to test their skills and finishing with a game on Arena Joondalup- the home of the West Perth Falcons and Joondalup Falcons.

“Research shows that it is the mother figure of the household that dictates what sport kids play,” says Andrew Ridley, West Perth District Manager. “By educating mum’s about the game of football we provide footy skills which gives them confidence to get out in the backyard to kick a ball with the kids as well as educating mum’s about the fun, safe game of football.”

Footy 4 Mums will be held on Monday nights from 7pm-8pm at Arena Joondalup starting on Monday 30th April 2012 and will run for 6 weeks. The program is open to all ladies and their is no minimum fitness or skill requirement and participants are encouraged only to do what they feel comfortable with.

So, grab a buddy from school or the local footy club and sign up to learn more about our great game of AFL.

TIME TO BURY THE 'MAGGOTT' LABEL

With recent Game Environmnet issues within our District over the last two seasons please find below a refreshing article from a Football Fan:

By Gwen Reisenberg (Gwen Reisenberg is a Geelong supporter and self-titled 'armchair sports journalist')

OK, So I know it's not AFL umpires appreciation week or anything but.....

As an undiscovered sports analyst and avid fan of the game itself, I am appalled by the views of the masses regarding the umpires. Umpires are the most underrated commodity in the AFL.

I have witnessed many a conversation between supporters of a team staring in the face of defeat or simply not playing well; on most occasions the umpires were completely responsible for the loss or poor performance.

The 22 players selected to play that day could not have done any more as the umpires obviously "had it in for them".

As a whole I think the umpires do a remarkable job. In a game with ever increasing rule changes and one of the fastest paced sports in the world, the umpires have to be just as quick if not quicker than the players themselves. I am constantly amazed at the ability of the umpires to see things almost quicker than the human eye.

Watching a game on TV recently, I saw many incidents where I was left thinking "how in the world did they see that?" when I saw absolutely nothing until the slow motion replay pointed it out to me.

The ability and fitness of the men in yellow (or red or green) to get to every contest is unbelievable and I have no doubt that they train just as hard as the players themselves.

The football supporters are an unforgiving bunch. I find it strange that fans will boo an incorrect umpiring decision but will not boo a player who makes a poor decision under pressure because this would be 'unsportsmanlike'.

I am full of admiration for the umpires at the highest level. They have done their time just like any other player on the field and no doubt have the same injury concerns, training and recovery sessions as any AFL player.

The difference being that they do it without the fanfare and special treatment that comes with a high profile.

Umpires are a nameless, faceless bunch that get no favours from the football community. They are not celebrated for milestone achievements nor are they recognised for the time and effort they put into each and every game they adjudicate.

Without them the game doesn't go on, it's as simple as that.

AFL players are put on pedestals for taking a good mark or kicking a 'miracle' goal. The men in yellow are never cheered openly for making a correct decision as this is considered 'their job'.

I for one am tired of the 'maggot' label and feel the football community as a whole need to move on from this old-school behaviour in the same way that we are moving forward in areas such as racial or sexual vilification.

This sort of behaviour no longer has a place in today's society and football 'ferals' are no exception.

To all those football followers out there who are so quick to judge the AFL's invaluable assets - I'd invite them to walk a mile (or run 20km) in an umpire's shoes and see if they can do a better job. I highly doubt it.

FACILITIES SURVEY: WA AMATEUR FOOTBALLL LEAGUE

The WAFC is supporting the WAAFL in completing a facilities survey of all senior metropolitan community football clubs. This is a major project that aims to objectively prioritise the core facility needs of all clubs. The review will generate a report that will also serve as a key document when seeking investment from local government and the Department of Sport and Recreation into future club facility upgrades and developments. A report will be presented at the next Presidents Meeting on 6 July. Clubs that have not provided their survey feedback will not be accounted for in this report.

Thank you to those Clubs who have provided their revised copy of the facilities survey. The WAAFL is still seeking these surveys from the following Clubs:

Armadale, Bayswater, Beechboro, Belmont Districts, Cockburn Lakes, Coolbinia WP, Forestdale, Hamersley Carine, High Wycombe, Kalamunda, Kelmscott, Kingsley, Lynwood Ferndale, Maddington, Mosman Park, Mt Lawley, Nollamara, North Beach, North Fremantle, Ocean Ridge, Roleystone, Safety Bay, Secret Harbour, Southern River, Swan View, Thornlie, Warnbro Swans, Wesley Curtin, West Coast Cowan

These can be returned immediately to the Community Football Office to cagnew@wafc.com.au
If your Club does not have a copy of this facility survey to review, please contact Sharni Rowe srowe@wafc.com.au to request a copy.

COACHES CORNER: POSITIVE APPROACH TO LOSING

Sometimes you watch AFL football and you can’t help but think one side has no chance of beating another and the interest is how the team not expected to win approaches the game from a tactical and psychological aspect.

Publicly there is never a suggestion of not being able to win. There is always a slightly positive spin put out by the least favoured team based around such statements as “if we play at our best and they are below their best” or “football is a funny game and anything can happen”. In many ways this is true and one of the beauties of sport is the upset victory. This leads me onto another interesting topic to do with junior football and that is what happens when matches of AFL football at junior level become lop-sided?

In professional sport winning is all that matters and winning by a lot helps when percentage or goal difference is important. But in junior sport you have to argue do you press home the advantage or do you take advantage of the situation and make it fairer to both teams?

In junior sport even competitions are what we need to aspire to; grading junior football to me has always been the best way to go about trying to create an even competition. Any administrative concerns about the impact grading has on scheduling for a league needs to be overcome. Research will support that grading over non-grading leagues at junior levels reduces winning margins. Whether grading is the sole answer is debatable, but whatever else we can do to create competitions which allow all teams to experience some success is, in my view, incredibly important.

If you are playing in a team which is thrashed every week then it becomes a disincentive for those footballers to either stay at that Club, or worse still, stay in the game. It tests coaches to make those children on the end of heavy defeats to have an involvement which is enjoyable. They need to ensure training is enjoyable and the players are improving their skills and team play. Everyone should be able to experience some success, even if it is at training. It’s impossible for a losing coach to do much. He could flood back and try and clog the opposition’s forward line, but that isn’t what we should be teaching them. So we need action from the coach of a dominant team.

Do they or their team really want to win easily? Maybe the coach could start by asking their players what they think. They may be surprised by their players’ response.

A coach could change player’s playing positions, so those who normally don’t get on the forward line or in the midfield can. Those young players who tend to dominate can be tried elsewhere to learn a different role. The coach can get the team to try new things, focus on how they want to move the ball or try new kick ins.

In New Jersey junior soccer they have rules under their Regulations titled “appropriate scores and competitive play”. It is an interesting read. The rule states:

“It is considered unsportsmanlike conduct to score an excessive number of goals without taking the appropriate steps to play a more competitive game.”

They do provide guidelines to avoid “running up the score” which includes

1) Rotating players to new positions
2) Setting purely defensive objectives
3) Substituting strongest players
4) Playing numerically short
They state it is important to exercise compassion for the other team.

In a lop-sided basketball game they run the clock down, meaning no stoppages of the clock to be called by referees. In our junior football this happens as a matter of course.

People will tell me losing is a part of life, but football isn’t life. It is sport and a chance to have fun. Losing is a part of the game, but being thrashed does not serve any purpose for the winners or losers.

We need to remember that long term involvement is the key and playing sport no matter how competitive needs to be enjoyable, particularly for children who are coming into the game for the first few years, which are the most critical in determining whether they will continue in the sport.

Recognising the value of football volunteers

THE West Australian Football Commission will recognise football’s unsung heroes following the launch of the 2011 WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award.

Now in its sixth year, the Award has grown each season, with over 500 nominations received in 2010 and the overall winner receiving a trip to the AFL Grand Final.

WAFC Club Development and Coaching Manager Glenn Morley said that this year, extra incentives were being offered to encourage even more nominations, including a special 10-pack of tickets to watch the Fremantle v Carlton blockbuster at Patersons Stadium in August.

“We’ve received almost 100 nominations this year already but we are hoping for even more,” Mr Morley said. “As an added bonus we are rewarding the local club that has the most nominees by the end of July with 10 tickets to the Fremantle v Carlton Match.”

Those nominating a candidate for Volunteer of the Year also go in the running to win weekly AFL tickets.

At the end of the season, a Volunteer Award will be presented in each of WA’s 17 Football Districts and Regions. Each of the District and Regional winners will be invited with a guest to the 2011 Sandover Medal count, where they will be acknowledged for their efforts among some of WA Football’s finest contributors.

Volunteers are invaluable resources that help to ensure over 4000 footballers can participate in a safe and fun game each week across our district. Education and support for our club volunteers is important for the future success of our game. Junior Football in WA is nationally renowned for its professional structure and capacity to deliver a safe fun and fair environment for every stakeholder. The major objective of Junior Football is to provide an opportunity for all children to play Australian Rules Football in a safe environment to maximise the acquisition of skill and provide enjoyment (Fun).

This document is designed to assist Team Managers with their role. Coaches and Team Managers have very important roles within a football team.
Letter to District Stakeholders: Developing Even Teams

Dear West Perth Junior Football League Stakeholders

RE: DEVELOPING EVEN TEAMS

In 2006 the WA Football Commission conducted a survey on ‘why youth stop playing football,’ gathering feedback from football members and stakeholders- it provided the following relevant information:

Why do kids drop out of football?

• Lack of time: factors including school, study, competing sports and work

• Poor coaching: including lack of knowledge, ‘win at all costs’ attitude and favouritism

• Uneven competitions: or playing in a side that gets convincingly beaten every week

• Parents: parents being too pushy (ugly parent syndrome), lack of parental guidance

• Club issues: including a lack of a pathway in football, club politics, and the lack of organisation

              of a club

• Physicality of the game: includes injury, talent and body size

• Pressure: including peer pressure and general life pressures.

The West Perth Junior Football League (WPJFL) aims to develop a sustainable junior football competition for all players 5 – 17 years with the number one objective being player retention. The WPJFL identified an issue in the current 14’s and 15’s competitions with clubs within our district that are counterproductive to this objective.

Under WA Football Commission Junior By-Laws in the event that a club enters more than one team in a single division in any age group; or has multiple teams in an age group, then… each team nominated by the respective club must be done so in a way that each team is considered equal strength. Please refer to By-Law 6 for more information.

As a result of the West Perth JFL review, a points re-allocation has occurred in the 15’s competition and changes will be made to the ladder as of Friday 29th July 2011.

Yours sincerely,

Darryl Sanders

Competition Director

Ocean Ridge AFC named Club of the Year

Ocean Ridge Football Club was crowned the the Ron Webster Memorial Champion Club Award at the 2011 Medal Presentation Dinner at Burswood Entertainment Complex last week.

The event, hosted by Clint Wheeldon, saw the fairest and best players from 25 grades crowned champions, culminating in the C.J Jamieson Medal being awarded to the A Grade Fairest and Best Clinton Gribble.

Also among those acknowledged on the night were the six WA Amateur League Footballers who were awarded All Australian Selection by the Australian Amateur Football Council.

Ocean Ridge takes out the award which recognises the champion club based on the following criteria:

Wins for League and Reserves teams

Guilty tribunal outcomes

Yellow cards

Attendance at delegates meetings

Other District Winners Included the following Fairest and Best winners:

C2: Matt Tate (Ocean Ridge)

Brett Jones Colts: Jake Hutchinson (Whitford)/Shaheed Duke (North Beach)

PREVIOUS ARTICLES

WHITFORD Amateur FC kept their finals hopes alive with a hard-fought upset win over ladder leaders Mt Lawley, 12.5 (77) to 11.9 (75) at Hamer Park at the weekend.

The win, ‍Whitford‍’‍s second in a row, keeps the Warriors in fifth spot on the WA Amateur Football League A Grade table and sets up a crucial grudge match against rivals North Beach this Saturday.

‍Whitford has won three out of the past four matches to power into finals contention after a lacklustre start to the season.

The team will be hoping to use the momentum gained over the past month to topple third-placed North Beach.

North Beach has also hit form at the right time of the year and will be hungry to secure a top-two place and a home final in the chase for an eighth consecutive A-Grade premiership.

A 46-point win over Fremantle CBC keeps North in touch with second-placed University, sitting half a game above North with only two matches remaining.

The match this Saturday at MacDonald Reserve will be the second time last year’s grand finalists have met this season, North Beach earning the points in the previous encounter , with forward Ben Wilson booting five goals.

Trent Batterham was a shining light for ‍Whitford that day with four goals and showing the form that saw him earn selection in the West Coast Eagles State Amateur under-23 squad that competed at this year’s national championship.

Whitford will need to quell the influence of North Beach star trio Cale Potts, Joe Boys and Josh Stott to have any chance, the trio all earning selection in the All-Australian side after their performances at the national championships

82 years of volunteering recognised across local football clubs

For more than 17 years Darryl Sanders has spent up 20-hours a week as a football volunteer. His love of the game has stood the test of time, seeing him stay on at the Whitford Junior Football Club long after his son finished playing and later taking on a league role with the West Perth Junior Football League as its Competition Director.

Darryl has been recognised as the West Perth Football District Volunteer of the Year in 2011- one of 182 nominees for the prestigious. Darryl will have the opportunity to attend the 2011 Sandover Medal Count where he has progressed to a state finalist for 2011 Football Volunteer of the Year.

At the 2011 West Perth Football District Awards evening six additional local football volunteers will be recognised alongside Darryl between them clocking up more than 82 years of service to football. Volunteer recognition will be presented to:

Lyn Lawrence- Quinns Bulls Amateur Football Club

Linda Cockman- Yanchep Redhawks Junior Football Club

Kathy Monck- Brighton Seahawks Junior Football Club

David Milton- Ocean Ridge Amateur Football Club

Sue Williams- West Perth Junior Football League

Mick Markham- West Perth Junior Umpires Association

Darryl’s journey as a football volunteer has not always been an easy one having held the roles of both Secretary and President at Whitford and his current role at the Junior Football League. It takes a special kind of volunteer to be involved for this leangth of time and to then go on to volunteer at League and commission level.

“It’s remarkable when people whose own children go through the club and no longer play football choose to remain in a club environment,” said Andrew Ridley- West Perth Distrcit Manager. “it’s more awe-inspiring when they take on a league role, the game certainly owes them a mark of respect.”

Sanders has developed some great programs during his volunteer time in football. Sanders has been involved in the organisation of every Auskick Carnival since 1993, a concept which began at his time at the Whitford JFC. The event started off with about 70 or 80 kids back then, and has grown to include more than 700 kids. In addition Darryl has been instrumental in setting up the West Perth Parent Umpire Program and prides his contributions to the continued review and development of Junior Football by-laws and regulations.

Darryl contributes his longevity in football volunteering to his family and love of the game. A life member of both the Whitford Junior Football Club and the West Perth Football District Sanders said “I’ve got a passion for football and at a junior level there are endless rewards. I’ve been lucky as my wife Mary has been a strong supporter in the background through all of this.” Mary Sanders is also a life member at the Whitford Junior Football Club.

The West Perth Football District Awards Presentation Evening will be held on Thursday 22nd September at the Beaumaris Sporting Complex.

More information can be obtained by contacting Andrew Ridley on 9300-3611

Darryl Sanders named WA Football Volunteer of the Year

WEST Perth district volunteer Darryl Sanders was recognised for more than 15 years of dedicated service when he was named the 2011 WA Football Volunteer of the Year at the WAFL's Sandover Medal count.

Mr Sanders was announced as the overall winner from 17 regional and district finalists and more than 850 nominees. He received a trip for two to the AFL Grand Final and will also march in the Grand Final parade and attend a Grand Final breakfast function.

Mr Sanders was nominated for the award by West Perth district manager Andrew Ridley, who said his love of the game had stood the test of time. He has continued his involvement with football long after his son finished playing Auskick.

“For more than 15 years, Darryl Sanders has spent countless hours a week as a volunteer for the West Perth football district and in clubs within our District – notably his time at the Whitford JFC,” Mr Ridley said.

“Darryl was awarded life membership of Whitfords JFC in 1999 and during his time at the club took on the roles of club president and secretary for a combined total of 10 years before becoming involved with the Junior Competition Committee in 2006. He is the current junior competition director for the district.

“In 2010 Darryl was awarded life membership of the West Perth DFDC for his service where he has held the position of Competition Director for more than five years.

“Darryl would easily contribute in excess of 20 hours volunteering for football each week during the season and 10-plus even through the summer months. The work this individual does is spectacular. He has a true love of the game, a passion and wants to make a positive difference.

“It takes a special kind of volunteer to become involved at a District and Commission level where they sometimes come under a lot of pressure. It’s remarkable when people whose own children go through the club and no longer play football choose to remain in a club environment. It’s an awe-inspiring thing and the game certainly owes them a mark of respect."

WA Football Commission club development and coaching manager Glenn Morley congratulated Mr Sanders on winning the award and emphasized the crucial role that volunteers play at all levels of football.

“WA has more than 46,000 volunteers participating every week in the game at all levels and without them the game would be lost. There are so many aspects of our game that just wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers,” Mr Morley said.

“Volunteers are involved at all levels whether it’s in the canteen, umpiring, peeling oranges, coaching or driving their kids to the game. The WA Football Volunteer of the Year program aims to elevate the standing of volunteers to that of a star. Just like you have star players and star coaches we want to recognise star volunteers.”

WANNEROO TEACHER AFL STAR

It’s been a great year for Justin Burt- not only did his team Geelong triumph in the Grand final, but he was also named an AFL School Ambassador Award winner for 2011.

Burt who is coordinator of Wanneroo Senior High School’s Australian Football Specialist Program, was one of 15 teachers honoured for their outstanding work.

Year 8 to 10 students at the school in Western Australia can now enjoy the specialist subject after Burt wrote each of the courses from scratch.

“We did Year 8 three years ago, then Year 9 last year and Year 10 for this year. Initially making up the [course] booklets took a long time,” Burt recalls.

“We weren’t planning as we were teaching, we made sure it was all ready to go and it was done over several months.”

Burt has been at Wanneroo SHS for six years. During Term 2 he coaches after school teams four days a week, prepares students for day carnivals and annual fixtures and runs camps.

He also coaches a representative team for West Perth District, which plays in a carnival in the Term 3 holidays. Burt says although it keeps him busy, the role is very rewarding.

All the winners were flown to Melbourne to attend the official AFL match function at the Collingwood vs West Coast finals fixture on September 10.
