Rise Up PD Day - Resilience in Sports Education

Friday, November 16, 2018 - 12:17 PM

An exciting, AFL themed professional development opportunity is in place for Friday 1st February 2019 for all education staff in the West Perth, Subiaco and Claremont Districts.

The event will be hosted at Alkimos Primary School starting at 11am. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from Fremantle FC, West Coast Eagles and West Perth Falcons District Development Staff about the programs they are coordinating in schools, as well as the future plans for these programs, with particular focus on women’s football.

Alkimos Primary School Health and Phys Ed Specialist Kristopher Fenn, put forward the idea to provide a professional learning day specific to role of Australian Rules football in our schools, therefore providing a point of difference to most PD days for education staff.

Smiling Minds has been engaged to present a workplace resilience workshop. As our key note presenters, they will be highlighting advantages of mindfulness and resilience concepts, not only in a sports setting but also in the classroom setting.  Smiling Minds is currently utilised by over 50,000 teachers.

Following this, a presentation from WAFC staff will provide a theoretical and practical session on coaching AFL in schools.

The end of the sessions will provide an opportunity for education staff to network among each other. An invitation will also be extended to each school’s respective local club to build upon connections and pathways for students into their local clubs. Refreshments will be available for a small cost.

This event is open to education staff within the West Perth, Claremont and Subiaco Districts. There is no cost attached to attend and lunch will be provided, courtesy of Alkimos Primary School.

RSVP is essential by COB Friday 7th December to: Kristopher.fenn@education.wa.edu.au with each attendee’s full name, school and any dietary requirements.

Please extend this invitation to other education staff within your school as this is not only limited to Physical Education Teachers. We hope to see many of you in attendance and look forward to meeting and working with many new faces.

What is 'New Age' Coaching?

Friday, October 26, 2018 - 1:49 PM

The ‘new age’ Coach, is more than a theory, it is a way of life and one we as community coaches and participants of our great game at the grassroots level should do what we can to adopt. Athlete centred coaching is what works best for our players, as well as for adult participants of the game.

Encouragement, fun, understanding and empathy are all great ways of engaging our children and the players we coach, not only to benefit their love of the game and getting outside, but that’s how we get out players to engage with skill development and overall retention.

If you are a coach or club official who would like more information about athlete centred coaching or the ‘new age’ coach, please don’t hesitate to contact the Metro North Coach Coordinator Wes Moran at wmoran@wafc.com.au.

West Perth Auskick Gala Day Wrap!

Friday, August 24, 2018 - 1:29 PM

Sunday the 12th Of August saw West Perth’s Auskick Gala Day held in glorious conditions at MacDonald Park, with over 800 kids from 79 teams take part in the annual event. Level 1 to Level 3 Auskick teams from local district centres took part in the opportunity to play fixtured games against each other, all for the fun of it and to enjoy the experience of the Gala Day. The Gala Day was also host to a number of StarKick games for teams including Quinns JFC, Joondalup Kinross JFC, Coolbinnia JFC and East Fremantle JFC. Starkick provides the opportunity for boys and girls aged between between 5 and 12, who by circumstance or choice are unable to join into the clubs existing football programs and who may need extra support or time to achieve their goals.

The sunny conditions were perfect for football and as games got under way at 8:30am, the BBQ was fired up and the day got rolling. West Perth Football Club senior players were in attendance and umpired across all 12 ovals across the day, providing that extra level of excitement for the kids. The West Perth Football Club presence extended to a merchandise station where the kids were able to grab a new jersey, jacket, flag or scarf, or a team poster to gather their local heroes signatures.

The day was made possible thanks to the efforts from all club volunteers, the District JCC, District Staff and of course, all the kids. A big thank you is also extended to Whitfords JFC for hosting the Gala Day at their home ground and for their efforts in marking the grounds and providing numerous equipment pieces.

Congratulations to all teams that participated, we hope you enjoyed the day and good luck with your end of season Auskick commitments.

Brighton’s Stephen Kinnersly named 2018 Falcons District “Sunday Times Volunteer of the Year”

Friday, August 24, 2018 - 12:17 PM

Stephen is an amazing person, a passionate individual who works tirelessly to go above and beyond for the Brighton Seahawks JFC. Stephen is a first time President and has been an outstanding, dedicated volunteer for many years at Brighton Seahawks JFC in various roles. Over the last seven years he has been a constant figure on the committee and as a coach. Stephen has taken on the role of Coach of many different teams to ensure that kids have somewhere to play footy.

In 2018 Stephen has done a fine job implementing girls football in the community and at the Club. Stephen was instrumental in supporting the establishment of a junior girls pathway in the Falcons District by actively recruiting new players and providing a venue to host games for Clubs across the Northern Conference. This has been crucial to establishing the inaugural Northern Conference Girls competition. He has been responsible, through tireless work, for putting together Brighton JFC’s first two female teams. Stephen organised uniforms, promotion, coaches and recruitment for the Club’s girls teams. Starting with 5 girls, Brighton JFC now have over 30, due largely to Stephen’s dedication to footy. Not stopping there Stephen went on to coach the Brighton year 9-11 girls team, the boys year 11 team (the first time the Club has had a team in this age group), and the Club’s year 6 team; the latter a team that he has been coaching since Auskick.

Stephen has also built good relationships with local schools and businesses to gain sponsors and promote Brighton JFC for future success. Stephen is always approachable, supports all volunteers at his Club, always has time to listen and communicates well with all members, creating a positive, inclusive Club. Nothing is ever a hassle for Stephen and under his leadership Brighton is a growing, successful Junior Football Club.

To top it off Stephen is always one of the first to arrive at the ground on game day to setup and is the last one to leave after packing away. To manage all this shows Stephen’s dedication to Brighton JFC and is inspiring to committee members, coaches and parents alike. With a wife, 3 children and his own full-time work, to still manage to do what he does, Stephen’s commitment is out of this world.

“He is a superstar and we can’t thank him enough for being so amazing! Steve is the most hardworking volunteer I've ever seen. He lives and breathes our football club and deserves to win this award”

Stephen will be invited to the 2018 Sandover Medal Count on Monday 17th September where he has progressed to the WA Final of the 2018 Sunday Times Football Volunteer of the Year. He will also join a strong band of District Volunteers to be recognised for their work in supporting WA Football on Friday 21st September at the 2018 Metro North Awards of Excellence.

Other volunteers to be recognised at the Awards of Excellence for their service to the West Perth Football District include:

- Tamara Deering, Edgewater Woodvale JFC

- Lorraine Elliott, Joondalup Kinross JFC

- Philip Furmage, Ocean Ridge JFC

- Shannon Tippett, Quinns Districts AFC

- Mark Clayton, Quinns Districts JFC

- Michelle Willcocks, Wanneroo JFC

- Stan Broom, West Perth FC
